in my head (2006-09-29)

this track was the first of a new approach to writing and recording i have taken, trigged by the acquisition of a sweet new microphone.

my intent was to capture the essence of the various loop jams i make pretty much every day when i practice guitar. it's been a long time since i'd followed any sort of disciplined agenda when practicing — i generally just noodle around and expore until something catches my ear. often that results in something interesting to me, so i loop it and go from there.

this piece started as a couple of different jams that i liked, and that kept popping up whenever i'd practice. over time various motives and ideas started to emerge and now this piece, despite it's heavily improvised nature, ends up coming out largely the same every time. this is interesting to me, because in my head it's just two chord progressions...

this also originated in a desire to utilize my loop sample more than i usually do. most of the time i just loop one chord progression or bassline, whereas this time i really tried to layer things in an interesting way.
